ypf lng export partnership

Argentina's energy sector is poised to become a major player in the global LNG market, thanks to a new partnership between YPF, Argentina's state-owned oil company, and three Indian energy giants: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), and ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL). This collaboration aims to export up to 10 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from Argentina's vast Vaca Muerta shale reserves, transforming the country into a global LNG powerhouse.

The Vaca Muerta shale formation, located in the Neuquén Basin in northern Patagonia, holds the world's second-largest shale gas reserves. With technically recoverable resources of 308 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 16 billion barrels of oil and condensate within 8.6 million acres, it is geologically comparable to the Eagle Ford shale play in southern Texas. The formation has already begun production, accounting for about 23% of Argentina's total gross natural gas production as of 2019.

YPF's strategy involves a phased approach to LNG development, with the first phase aiming to bring 1-2 million tons of capacity online by 2027 using floating LNG facilities. Subsequent phases will expand production through onshore plants, with an estimated $30 billion investment required for the entire Argentina LNG project.

According to YPF's CEO Horacio Marin, "The partnership involves India's Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Gas Authority of India Limited, and ONGC Videsh Limited. It extends beyond LNG to include cooperation in lithium, critical minerals, and hydrocarbon exploration. This move aligns with Argentina's goal to become a major energy exporter."

The implications of this deal extend far beyond simple energy trade, reshaping South America's role in the global energy landscape and potentially redefining international energy partnerships for decades to come.

Major LNG Deal Shapes Energy Future

A landmark energy agreement between Argentina's state-owned oil company YPF and three major Indian firms—Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), and ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL)—marks a significant step towards shaping the energy future of both countries.

This strategic partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on January 21, 2025, aims to export up to 10 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from Argentina to India, underscoring the growing importance of energy cooperation between these nations.

This ambitious deal extends beyond LNG to include cooperation in lithium, critical minerals, and hydrocarbon exploration, aligning with Argentina's goal to become a major energy exporter. The agreement comes after YPF's successful partnership with Shell, replacing their previous arrangement with Petronas of Malaysia.

YPF plans to generate $30 billion in revenues over the next decade through energy exports, with the Argentina LNG project potentially reaching 30 million tons of annual LNG production by 2032. This project requires an estimated $30 billion investment and will tap into Argentina's vast Vaca Muerta shale formation, which holds the world's second-largest shale gas reserves.

The partnership involves a phased approach to LNG development, with the first phase aiming to bring 1-2 million tons of capacity online by 2027 using floating LNG facilities, and subsequent phases expanding production through onshore plants.

YPF's CEO Horacio Marin emphasized the significance of India's role in the project, stating, "This project is project finance. You can't finance yourself because the quantity of money you have to invest in the LNG plant is huge for any company".

According to Marín, in an exclusive conversation with FinancialExpress.com, "India will be the engine of the world in the next decade… This project is about more than just small buyers; it's about building a long-term relationship".
