You might've noticed there's been quite a buzz in the Barents Sea lately, and for good reason. Vår Energi just hit the jackpot for the third time straight with their Zagato oil discovery near the Goliat FPSO. With potential resources of up to 43 million barrels of oil equivalent, this find isn't just another drop in the ocean – it's part of a larger success story that could reshape Norway's energy landscape.
As Vår Energi continues its impressive streak in the Barents Sea, the company has announced its third consecutive oil discovery near the Goliat field. The latest find, dubbed the Zagato discovery, is located just 8 kilometers northeast of the Goliat FPSO and shows significant promise for future development.
You'll be interested to know that the discovery holds estimated recoverable resources ranging from 15 to 43 million barrels of oil equivalent. When combined with previous finds in the area, the total potential resources could reach up to 100 MMboe, with gross discovered and prospective resources possibly exceeding 200 MMboe.
The exploration well, drilled by the COSL Prospector, revealed oil columns in multiple formations, including the Kobbe, Tubåen, and Klappmyss formations. The primary targets yielded impressive 72-meter oil columns, while secondary targets showed smaller but notable findings of 3 and 2 meters. The semi-submersible rig operates under the ownership of COSL Drilling Europe for both exploration and infill drilling activities.
What makes this discovery particularly valuable is its proximity to existing infrastructure. The nearby Goliat FPSO means Vår Energi can develop these resources quickly and efficiently, keeping costs down and minimizing environmental impact.
The company, which holds a 65% interest in the project alongside partner Equinor's 35%, is already planning its next moves.
Looking ahead, Vår Energi isn't slowing down. They're planning to drill around 20 exploration wells over the next four years, with new seismic surveys scheduled for summer 2025.
Two more exploration wells are already in the pipeline for Q3 2025, as the company works to maintain its production target of 350-400 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.
