UK ROV Under Construction for Mexican Subsea Services Provider
Forum Energy Technologies is currently working on an ultra-compact Perry XLX-C Work-Class ROV for AQUA Exploracion, a Mexican subsea services provider, rather than for the UK Ministry of Defence's SALMO as previously stated. This advanced underwater vehicle is part of a contract secured by FET to supply one of its XLX-C work-class remotely operated vehicles to enhance AQUA Exploracion's subsea exploration, inspection, and intervention operations in challenging environments.
The XLX-C work-class ROV features a 3000 m depth rating (optional 4000 m), a seven-function manipulator arm for complex underwater procedures, and compact Dynacon LARS design, making it well-suited for inspection, survey, repair, and subsea maintenance tasks. Ancillary tools and sensors can also be added to the vehicle for survey and light intervention work.
Kevin Taylor, FET's Vice President – KMS and Subsea Robotics, highlighted the versatility of the XLX-C: "We are extremely pleased that our ROV has been chosen to support AQUA Exploracion. The XLX-C WROV is one of the most versatile models on the market and has the capabilities required for the tasks that it will undertake for AQUA Exploracion".
Luis Gamez, AQUA Exploracion's Commercial Director, added: "We are confident that the integration of the XLX-C work-class ROV into our operations will not only elevate our performance in subsea exploration and intervention but also enhance our reputation as a leading provider of integrated subsea solutions".
This advanced underwater vehicle showcases the capabilities of modern ROV technology in supporting complex marine operations.
ROV Development Strengthens UK Maritime Industry
In the UK's ongoing efforts to bolster its maritime capabilities, a significant development is underway in Yorkshire's Kirkbymoorside facility. Forum Energy Technologies is constructing an advanced XLX-C Work-Class ROV for the Ministry of Defence, valued at £10.5m for the vehicle and £7.5m for additional equipment, spanning two years and nine months. This project not only secures jobs for the existing workforce but also creates opportunities for four modern apprentices.
The ROV, connected to a surface vessel through an umbilical cable, can carry a substantial 200-kilogramme payload and perform a variety of tasks, including wreck surveys and salvage operations. Its robotic arms mirror human dexterity, making it ideal for complex underwater engineering support and can operate for over five days when needed. The system's 720p colour camera provides high-quality visual data for detailed underwater inspections.
According to Kevin Taylor, FET's Vice President Operations – Subsea: "We are extremely pleased that FET has been selected again by SALMO for an additional ROV system. This is one of the most versatile systems on the market and has the capabilities required for the tasks that it will undertake for the SALMO team. We look forward to delivering the solution on time next year".
The timing is particularly opportune as the UK's offshore sector experiences increased demand for ROV services, particularly in the North Sea. This vehicle will support both traditional oil and gas operations and the growing renewable energy sector, where safety and cost efficiency are paramount.
The versatility of this ROV is noteworthy, as it can be outfitted with various sensors and tools for specific missions, whether it's locating aircraft on the seabed or assisting in submarine towage. This adaptability aligns with current market trends, where technological advancements in sensors and artificial intelligence are driving industry growth.
Andy Liddell, Head of SALMO, highlighted the significance of this project: "A momentous amount of work has gone into preparing what's been a complex contract in a very short time. The project team have pulled together and demonstrated a holistic and agile route to procurement. It was a great feeling to sign the contract and move us into the next stage".
This project represents more than just a new piece of equipment; it's an indication of the UK's commitment to sustainable subsea operations and environmental protection, supporting the ongoing energy shift while maintaining vital maritime capabilities.
