Orkney's renewable energy ambitions have received a significant boost with the announcement of a £5 million grant for the development of Scapa Flow into a major hub for offshore wind projects. The funding, provided by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), is part of the Scottish Government's strategic investment of up to £500 million over five years to develop the offshore wind supply chain. The new harbour facility at Scapa Flow, the largest natural harbour in the northern hemisphere, will feature a 600m quay with a water depth of at least -15m chart datum and a 20-hectare laydown area, supporting the assembly of offshore wind turbines.

The proposed Scapa Deep Water Quay is set to help advance the industry to the next level It will help attract inward investment, create jobs and drive economic growth in Orkney, the Highlands and Islands and across Scotland, as well as contributing to the country's net zero ambitions."
