jadestone energy offshore vietnam development

With 171.3 billion cubic feet of gas resources waiting to be tapped, you might wonder why Vietnam's Nam Du and U Minh fields haven't been developed sooner. Jadestone Energy's newly submitted Field Development Plan offers an ambitious solution: unmanned platforms connected to a floating production vessel, targeting 80 million cubic feet of daily production. As Vietnam seeks to boost its energy independence, this offshore project could reshape the region's power dynamics.

As Jadestone Energy moves forward with its ambitious offshore development plans in Vietnam, the company's recently submitted Field Development Plan (FDP) marks a significant milestone for its Nam Du and U Minh gas fields. The London-listed independent producer has laid out a detailed strategy for developing these shallow-water assets, which contain an impressive 171.3 Bscf of contingent gas resources and 1.6 MMbbl of liquids.

You'll find the development concept particularly interesting, as it centers around unmanned wellhead platforms at each field connected to an FPSO facility. Paul Blakeley, the company's president and CEO, is leading the strategic development of these vital assets. The plan calls for drilling two wells from each platform to achieve a steady production rate of 80 MMscf/d. A 34-kilometer pipeline will link the facilities to the existing trunkline at the Ca Mau industrial complex, where the gas will power local energy generation and fertilizer manufacturing.

The company's recent progress includes signing a heads of agreement with PetroVietnam Gas in January 2024, securing a take-or-pay arrangement for the full 80 MMcf/d production over a minimum 55-month plateau period.

Jadestone's planning shows careful attention to timing, with drilling activities set to begin in June 2026 and first gas targeted for late that year. The regulatory journey involves key steps through Vietnam's approval process, with Petrovietnam's endorsement needed before the Ministry of Industry and Trade gives final approval.

While the company works through these requirements, they're actively progressing major contract tenders for FPSO and EPCI work. With a final investment decision expected around mid-2025, Jadestone's 100% working interest in both blocks positions them well for this significant development in Vietnam's energy landscape.
